Earlier this summer, Sony closed another fiscal year of being in the red , but it’s starting the 2010/11 ledger with its quill dipped firmly in the black inkwell. For the quarter ending June 30, the Japanese megacorp clocked up ¥25.7 billion ($293 million) in pure, unadulterated profit off the back of a ¥67 billion operating income. When you compare that to the performance this time last year, a ¥37 billion loss, you have to agree that the Stringer purse-tightening program seems to have delivered the desired effect

Being tied to a disc hasn’t made for the easiest Netflix Watch Instantly experience on the PlayStation 3, but it has its benefits, and now that includes the ability for all users to search its library directly on the console. This feature’s been available to some for months before it was even announced the Xbox 360 would get parity in a fall update, but we can confirm it’s currently rolling out to all PS3 users. It should automatically update the next time you’re watching, so just slide left from Instant Queue on the top bar to live the glorious life of title searching that you deserve.

How will sir be having his gimmick today? The devs behind the upcoming Sly Cooper 3D compilation are wisely mulling over the idea of inserting a 3D-adjusting slider to let users decide just how much stereoscopy they want with their Sony-approved gaming. It’s argued that this should allow you greater positional flexibility when smacking fools down in three dimensions, as you’ll be able to manually toggle the depth of the 3D effect to suit your viewing angle

It’s still a pretty big window, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has narrowed down the time until we can expect a disc-free streaming experience on our PS3s from ” later this year ” to some time before its next earning call, which should happen around October 21. Other notes from the Q2 highlights included a shoutout to Hulu Plus , where Netflix “plans to learn what customers like about Hulu Plus” and use that to enhance its service, as well as the upcoming launch of a streaming service in Canada , and how the lessons learned may be applied to other “pure streaming” offerings internationally in the future. Investors aren’t too happy the company missed earnings projections, but we’re figuring once they close the ETrade window and pick up a Shockaxis they’ll start to get over it

Sorry, fellow gamers, we’re out of luck if we want to play stereoscopic PS3 titles in their full high definition glory — Joystiq reports that Sony guidelines won’t allow for 1080p 3D.

More PS3 news from Sony. What was already known to be a fall release has just narrowed to September 30th for Sony’s $199 PS3 Surround Sound System — at least in Japan. As you might recall, this budget Sony soundbar with integrated sub-woofer and S-Force PRO Front Surround technology tethers up snuggly with your PS3 over optical digital supporting Dolby digital, DTS, MPEG-2 AAC and Linear PCM audio formats

At last, the first post-E3 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 , and as you might’ve suspected, this one’s got PlayStation Plus packed into the mix. We’ve talked about the service a bit so far, but to recap, $50 annual nets you a 50 percent discount on PSN titles, early access to betas, and one hour of demo time on select full titles (among other benefits).

With less than a week before PlayStation Network’s premium subscription plan launches, many gamers still haven’t the foggiest idea what it does — which isn’t terribly promising for a service that costs $50 a year, or even $18 for three months. Thankfully, the official PlayStation.Blog has stepped forward to clear up that noise, explaining more concretely what comes with PlayStation Plus

With a name like “PS3 MMO Controller” there’s probably not much more that you need to know about this monstrous creation from Hori. It isn’t exactly Final Fantasy themed, but seems to be targeted for those who will be chocobo breeding in XIV . Its main component is, of course, the big white keyboard, but there’s also that extension on the left side, replicating the left portion of a Dual Shock and looking like something found on a Battlestar Galactica set (the original, natch).
