+ Ikonoskop teases A-cam3D to shoot 1080p RAW video in stereo By admin 04 February 2010 at 9:34 am and have No Comments

We don’t know much about this thing, Ikonoskop is only teasing the bare minimum of specs, but while we don’t expect to be able to afford it, the upcoming A-cam3D is certainly an object of lust. The company has cut its teeth on a $10k 1080p RAW camera, the A-cam dII, and now it’s taking that same tech into the realm of 3D.

+ Sony returns to profitability as core electronics business struggles By admin 04 February 2010 at 4:53 am and have No Comments

Finally, after closing 18% of its manufacturing facilities and cutting 20,000 heads across its global organization, Sony just posted a profit for the quarter. We’re talking an operating profit of ¥146 billion ($1.5 billion) for the quarter on ¥2.2 trillion in sales. Sony’s net profitability came in at ¥79.2 billion after three straight quarters of losses , handily beating The Street’s mean estimate of ¥33.73 billion sending stock up some 4% at the time of this post.

+ Apple gets a patent on smart screen bezels By admin 03 February 2010 at 9:15 pm and have No Comments

Apple might have finally released the iPad , but the rumor mill is already on to prognosticating about the next rev — and as usual, Apple’s patents and patent applications are everyone’s favorite place to start. (And for good reason, really — that very first design patent we inititally noticed way back in 2004 is exactly what the iPad looks like, down to the bezel and Dock connector.) The latest tidbit is a patent granted earlier this week on an intelligent touch-sensitive bezel, which would essentially extend the touchpanel beyoned the edges of the screen to create an entire border of context-specific soft buttons — the iPod app might have playback controls at the bottom, while Safari could put the navigation bar down there and Pages could do formatting stuff at the top.

+ Symbian’s revealing something tomorrow, but what? (update: open source!) By admin 03 February 2010 at 8:41 pm and have No Comments

Oh, Symbian, you tease ! For an organization as committed to openness and sharing its roadmap (and its code) as the Symbian Foundation , it’s pretty unusual that they’d be counting down to a big unveiling of anything — but sure enough, they’ve been tweeting decreasing numbers with the hashtag “#symbiancountdown” starting back on January 26 with 108. Today we’re down to 12 (it’s hard to say what sort of jacked-up counting system they’re using here) with a note of “what will tomorrow bring?” so it looks like we can expect this all to go down in just a few short hours.

+ Motorola Zeppelin spotted again, Android-ness confirmed By admin 03 February 2010 at 1:25 pm and have No Comments

Yes, we’ve seen this puppy before — but last time, we’d merely heard it was running Android. This time around, we’ve got a little more confirmation that the so-called Zeppelin from Moto is sporting Google code (allegedly Cupcake , sadly) with a dash of Blur added in for good measure.

+ Japan certifies its first LTE device, LG says ‘whoa, ours?’ By admin 03 February 2010 at 2:33 am and have No Comments

In a country whose carriers’ phone lineups are dominated by domestic giants like NEC, Sony, Sharp, and Fujitsu, you wouldn’t necessarily think that the road to 4G would begin elsewhere — strangely, though, South Korea’s LG has garnered the honor of becoming the first company to have an LTE device certified by Japan’s TELEC, a necessary, FCC-like step to getting cellular equipment deployed in those parts. NTT DoCoMo, which intends to launch commercial LTE service later this year, is undoubtedly stoked to hear that the LD100 external modem is the lucky recipient of TELEC’s seal of approval (following FCC certification last year, coincidentally), meaning the carrier now has the green light to use it in trials.
